Analyzing the Worldwide Wetland Parks Research: A Spectral-Cluster Algorithm Latent Semantic Index Approach

This study reviews worldwide wetland park research from 1996 to 2022. A bibliometric analysis is conducted on 591 wetland park studies indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The study utilizes CiteSpace and VOSviewer tools to visualize and explore influential research focuses, themes, directions, and countries. The citation burst indicates that from 1996 to 2022, research on wetland parks transited from exploring basic community structures to complex ecosystem service assessments and the formulation of management strategies. Furthermore, over the past three years, wetland park research has seen a significant surge in studies investigating water quality, ecosystem services, and spatiotemporal analysis. Notably, the three most frequent keywords in research on wetland parks were China, South Africa, and biodiversity. These keywords reflect regions that enhance biodiversity via wetland parks. The spectral-clustering algorithm identifies carbon sequestration as a research focus, highlighting the vital role of wetlands in the carbon cycle. Most authors work in developed countries’ institutions, but some are from developing countries like China, South Africa, and India. The findings suggest that economic development is crucial in wetland park construction and significantly influences related research. Developed countries may offer more PhD positions to developing countries’ researchers in the field and raise their awareness about wetland conservation. Given the holistic requirements of wetlands, this research recommends that educators should adopt an interdisciplinary approach in the future when nurturing wetland staff. Additionally, the study maps out the primary areas of interest in wetland park research, including environmental science, ecological economics, forestry, wetlands, tourism, and management. New artificial intelligence and digital technologies should be developed for wetland park research. This study fills a research gap: quantitative and visualized knowledge-mapping and bibliometrics on wetland parks are scarce. Additionally, no previous study has explored the relationship between wetland park research and the economic development of countries.

Dietary multi-strains Bacillus spp. enhanced growth performance, blood metabolites, digestive tissues histology, gene expression of Oreochromis niloticus, and resistance to Aspergillus flavus infection

AbstractThe present study tested the symbiotic effects of dietary multi-strain Bacillus probiotics (MSB) (Bacillus licheniformis, B. pumilus, and B. subtilis) in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to Aspergillus flavus infection. Furthermore, this study investigated water quality, growth performance, blood metabolites, histological morphology, immune regulatory genes, and resistance to A. flavus infection. For 70 days, fish (n = 240) were divided into four groups in triplicate: T0 (control group; MSB0), T1 (1 g/kg, MSB1), T2 (2 g/kg, MSB2), and T3 (3 g/kg, MSB3). The immune response was then assessed by challenging all fish groups with the A. flavus pathogen. The results showed that the rearing water quality, fish growth, and blood parameters, as well as total proteins, albumin, globulins, and amylase activity were significantly (P < 0.05) increased in all MSB-treated groups with the best results in MSB2 and MSB3 groups. Meanwhile, the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), cholesterol, and glucose levels were significantly (P < 0.05) modulated, particularly at higher concentrations of the probiotic mixture (MSB3 group). Fish fed with various levels of MSB showed a maintained histological structure of the hepatopancreas, intestine, and spleen tissues. The mRNA expression of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), insulin-like growth factor receptor-1 (IGF-1R), and interleukin-8 (IL-8) were increased in a dose-dependent manner due to MSB dietary inclusion (P < 0.05). Conversely, the mRNA expression of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) gene was significantly decreased in MSB groups compared to untreated group (P < 0.05). Surprisingly, supplemented groups in Bacillus spp. probiotics exhibited significant modulations in all computed parameters. MSB supplementation improved the pathogenic tolerance of tilapia after change with A. flavus. The integration of growth performance, biochemical, and transcriptomic results confirms that the dietary intervention of multi-strain Bacillus spp. is symbiotic and enhances the benefits for the maintenance of O. niloticus’ health, growth, and digestion. This is achieved by supporting growth genes, reducing inflammatory genes, and enhancing immune-antioxidant resistance to combat A. flavus infection.

Hydrochemical characterization and assessment of health risks of trace elements in the Huai River Basin of China.

Basin water pollution is a global problem, especially in the densely populated areas. The Huai River Basin (abbreviated as HRB), including the Huai River system and the Yishu River system, is the sixth-largest and most densely populated watershed in China. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies of river and well water throughout the Huai River basin, including hydrochemistry characterization and assessment of health risks. This study investigated water quality and pollution sources of river and well water in the HRB based on the hydrochemistry analysis and different water quality indices. The water body in the HRB showed weak alkalinity (pH = 8.4 ± 0.7) and had high TDS values (TDS = 339 ± 186mg/L) with water types of HCO3-Ca-Mg and SO4-Cl-Ca-Mg in the Huai River system, and SO4-Cl-Ca-Mg in the Yishu River system. Atmospheric input and evaporation had less impact on hydrochemistry. Evaporite dissolution and carbonate weathering had a greater impact on hydrochemistry. Carbonate precipitation and cation exchange also influenced the dissolved solutes, especially Ca2+ and Na+. Samples had low to medium salinity hazards and sodium absorption ratios and were suitable for irrigation. For drinking purposes, samples were fresh water and have good or excellent according to the Water Quality Index (WQI). Land use types influenced water quality with the worst river water quality from cropland. Combining different assessment indices, the water quality of the Yishu River system performed betterthanthe Huai River system. Absolute principal component analysis-multiple linear regression and the positive matrix factorization models identified the main pollutants as As, Ba, Cr, Ni, and Mn, with natural sources of As, Ba, and Ni and anthropogenic inputs of Cr, and Mn. Although the water quality of the HRB has improved in recent years, high potential risk from As, Cr, Mn, Ba, and Ni should be noted. This study provided vital information for basin hydrochemistry analysis and water quality assessment.

“The Gems of Water”: a co-created scientist-citizen approach for water quality monitoring

To better understand local water quality pollution by organic contaminants and how it affects communities around the world, “The Gems of Water” project aims to build a co-creative global scientist-citizen approach, actively engaging citizens and connecting them to scientists and to advanced water monitoring tools. The project applies the Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction technique with an advanced wide-screening method, used to assess the occurrence of agrochemicals, industrial compounds and pharmaceuticals in surface and groundwaters. In collaboration between Coral Conservation and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, a study was conducted to identify contamination patterns which could be affecting the coral reef by investigating water quality in local rivers in the south Caribbean region of Costa Rica, an area characterized by agricultural activities linked to bananas production. Coral Conservation is a youth-led non-governmental organization focused on activities for the conservation and protection of the coral reef. Sampling locations for the study were jointly determined with members of the Coral Conservation group and included 13 sampling points from 3 different rivers and 2 wells. The pilot study allowed evaluation of the workflow for scientist-citizen collection of water quality data, whereby participants from the local community conduct sampling and extraction activities, while the wide-screening analysis of about 230 contaminants is performed at the JRC Water Laboratory. Considering the lessons learned through the Costa Rican pilot case, in this paper we discuss the elements required for successful scientist-citizen projects. Challenges are described and outlooks provided to improve citizens’ engagement projects and others participatory water quality monitoring activities. “The Gems of Water” project contributes to data collection of rarely monitored compounds in rural and remote areas through a scientist-citizen approach, addressing knowledge gaps on water quality and building bridges between science and society. The outlook is for such an innovative approach to support bottom-up management actions which can lead to alternative solutions in water quality management.

Investigation of fluoride concentrations, water quality, and non-carcinogenic health risks of borehole water in bongo district, northern Ghana

Access to potable water is a significant concern due to the increasing global threat posed by fluoride contamination in groundwater sources. This study investigated the concentrations of fluoride (F−), the suitability of groundwater for human consumption, the physicochemical characteristics affecting the water quality, and non-carcinogenic adverse health risks to both children and adults in the Bongo district in Northern Ghana. The findings revealed that the groundwater had a mean pH, salinity, TDS, conductivity, and turbidity below the WHO guideline values with a mean fluoride concentration of 1.76 mg/L above the guideline limit of 1.5 mg/L. The study also found that there was no strong relationship between fluoride and the measured water parameters, which may be attributed to poor control of distribution, transport mechanisms, and sources. The WQI scores ranged from 42.62% to 70.72%, indicating that all borehole water samples were of good and excellent quality. The average chronic daily intake showed that children are often more exposed to the harmful impact of fluoride than adults. The average HQ > 1 indicates the probability of dental and skeletal fluorosis after continuous exposure over time in adults and children. The study recommends taking immediate action to mitigate high groundwater fluoride concentrations, implementing appropriate water management strategies, and raising public awareness of the health risks. These measures can guide future groundwater management practices and help policymakers address contamination and protect local communities.

Investigation of Water Quality of River Poonch for Drinking and Irrigation Purposes

In the present work, we reported fifteen water samples that were collected from selected locations in the study area of Poonch River. All water samples were collected and labelled in polythene bottles at the sites where water depth was 1 meter. The river Poonch flows through Indian occupied Kashmir and Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan. The collected samples were tested for major physical and chemical water suitability parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity total dissolved solids, total alkalinity total hardness chlorides, major metals and heavy metals standard. The aforementioned analysis of samples was reported by methods such as conductometery, potentiometery and atomic absorption spectrometry.

Microbial water quality investigation through flow cytometry fingerprinting: from source to tap

Abstract Ensuring the quality of treated drinking water is crucial for preventing potential health impacts, regulatory fines, and reputation damage. Traditional culture-based microbiological methods often fail to capture the heterogeneity of the bacterial communities in drinking water. This study employed daily interstage monitoring and flow cytometry (FCM) analysis over a period of one year to investigate the dynamics of water treatment processes and service reservoirs. The objective of this study was to test the utility of FCM fingerprints for aiding in microbial event detection. We found that the chlorine concentration contact time was pivotal for microbial log reduction across the treatment works. FCM fingerprints exhibited significant deviations during operational events, such as process interruptions, but did not correlate with the presence of bacterial indicator organisms in the distributed and tap water. Furthermore, the diversity of bacterial fingerprints, quantified by the Bray–Curtis dissimilarity index, served as an indicator for identifying potentially poor microbial water quality. In chlorinated waters with low cell counts, the background signal shows potential as a metric to differentiate between different water sources, thereby offering the possibility to characterize breakthrough events in these circumstances that challenge most other microbial analytical methods. Interestingly, groundwater from simpler treatment works showed a higher occurrence of bacterial indicators, whereas surface water works had a lower incidence. These findings underpin the importance of appropriate disinfection even for “low-risk” source waters and the added value that the statistical interpretation of FCM data can offer objective decision making.

Investigation of Water Quality in Aizawl City, Mizoram, India

Water derived from various sources may differ greatly in quality and suitability for domestic use. Ideally, water intended for human consumption must be free from organisms and from concentration of chemical substances that may be hazardous to health. In addition, supplies of drinking water should be as pleasant to drink as circumstances permit. Coolness, absence of turbidity and colour and absence of any disagreeable taste or smell are of the utmost importance in public supplies of drinking water. Drinking water or potable water is water of sufficiently high quality that it can be consumed or used without risk of immediate or long-term harm to human health. Water samples from different water sources were collected for testing the quality. Fifteen samples each from tuikhur and hand pumps, one sample each from River Tlawng and Serlui, one sample each from three springs located outside the residential area from where water tankers collect water, five samples of rainwater, and five samples from piped water supply. All together forty-five water samples were collected and tested for physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters. 

Health risk assessment of uranium intake from private residential drinking groundwater facilities based on geological characteristics across the Republic of Korea

Groundwater contributes to an average of 8 % of the total water source capacity in the Republic of Korea. Hence, private residential households in rural areas in Korea are still using groundwater for drinking without any regular water quality inspection. This can increase the risk of exposure to natural radionuclides like uranium through drinking groundwater. This study investigated the uranium level in drinking groundwater all over the country by analyzing 11,451 samples from private residential drinking groundwater facilities and compared the exposure amount and its associated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk based on the geological characteristics of the aquifer. Results yield that although the average hazard quotient (HQ) and excess cancer risk (ECR) of exposure to natural uranium through drinking groundwater were respectively below 1 and 1 × 10−6 and do not indicate a potential health hazard, significantly high HQ and ECR up to respectively 70 and 4 × 10−4 in samples where the aquifer is the Jurassic granite observed. Accordingly, regular water quality investigation and onsite treatment methods are required to provide healthy drinking water in such areas.

Managing a cyanobacteria harmful algae bloom “hotspot” in the Sacramento – San Joaquin Delta, California

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs) have become a persistent seasonal problem in the upper San Francisco Estuary, California also known as the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta). The Delta is comprised of a complex network of open water bodies, channels, and sloughs. The terminus of the Stockton Channel is an area identified as a CHAB “hotspot.” As CHABs increase in severity, there is an urgent need to better understand CHAB drivers to identify and implement mitigation measures that can be used in an estuarine complex like the Delta. We investigated water quality conditions and nutrient dynamics in the Stockton Channel by measuring nutrients in the water column, sediments, and pore waters. In situ nutrient addition bioassay experiments were used to assess the effects of nutrient enrichment on total algal/cyanobacterial growth and pigment concentrations. In both June and September, relative to unamended controls, total chlorophyll and cyanobacterial pigment concentrations were unaffected by nutrient additions; hence, the study area showed signs of classical hypereutrophication, with ambient nitrogen and phosphorus present in excess of algal growth requirements. A cyanobacterial bloom, dominated by Microcystis spp. was present throughout the study area but was most severe and persistent at the shallowest site at the channel terminus. At this site, Microcystis spp. created water quality conditions that allowed for a prolonged bloom from June through September. While targeted nutrient reductions are recommended for long term mitigation, on a shorter timescale, our findings suggest that physical/mechanical controls are the more promising alternative approaches to reduce the severity of CHABs in the terminus of the Stockton Channel.

Assessment of Water Quality at Padang Terap River In Kedah, Malaysia

Despite being an odorless and tasteless liquid at room temperature, water has is the most vital element for all living things. A sanitary survey is an on-site assessment of the water source and its sufficiency, as well as the facilities, equipment, operations, and maintenance of a public water system. In this study, the major focus is on evaluating a few criteria to ascertain the level of river water purity, including pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, conductivity, and chlorine residue levels. Eight study areas along the Padang Terap River, including Kg. Kuala Lanjut, Alatar Terusan Tengah, Kg. Banggol Temak, Kg. Kerkau, Kg. Bukit Kechik, Kg. Chegar, Kg. Lubuk Ular, and Kg. Keda Tanjung Setul, have been selected as sample stations. Turbidity, colorimetric, pH, DO, and conductivity meters are among the instruments used to calculate the value for the physical test of a water sample. Chemical and microbiological factors were examined in the laboratory for the investigation of water quality. Within 24 hours, 56 bottles of water from 8 sampling sites were sent to the laboratory for chemical sample examination. The finding shows compliance with standard for the physical or chemical samples, except for the microbe sample taken from Kg Banggol Termak and Kg Kerkau station. The station's non-compliance with standard of E. coli and total coliform shows contamination from microbes most probably caused by adjacent restaurants and agricultural sites. Assessment of water quality in water treatment plant nearby shows compliance with standard proving the effectiveness of water treatment in Kedah, Malaysia. In conclusion, ensuring water quality is of paramount importance for the health and well-being of both human populations and the environment. Monitoring and managing water quality involve continuous efforts to mitigate pollution, preserve natural water sources, and adopt sustainable practices.

New model of long-term changes in spatiotemporal patterns of water quality across Shatt-Al-Arab River by applying GIS technique, from 1976 to 2020

PurposeUsing a combination of the geographical information system (GIS) and the Canadian water quality index (WQI), the current study sought to provide a long-term general assessment of the water quality of the Shatt Al-Arab River (SAAR), focusing on its suitability for living organisms. Likewise, SPSS statistics was used to develop a nonlinear WQI regression model for the study area.Design/methodology/approachThe study required four decades of data collection on some environmental characteristics of river water. After that, calculate the WQI and conduct the spatial analysis. Eight variables in total, including water temperature, dissolved oxygen, potential hydrogen ions, electrical conductivity (EC), biological oxygen demand, turbidity, nitrate and phosphate, were chosen to calculate the WQI.FindingsThroughout the study periods, the WQI values varied from 55.2 to 79.83, falling into the categories of four (marginal) and three (fair), with the sixth period (2007–2008) showing the most decline. The present research demonstrated that the high concentration of phosphates, the high EC values, and minor changes in the other environmental factors are the major causes of the decline in water quality. The variations in ecological variables' overlap are a senior contributor to changes in water quality in general. Notably, using GIS in conjunction with the WQI has shown to be very effective in reducing the time and effort spent on investigating water quality while obtaining precise findings and information at the lowest possible expense. Calibration and validation of the developed model showed that this model had a perfect estimate of the WQI value. Due to its flexibility and impartiality, this study recommends using the proposed model to estimate and predict the WQI in the study area.Originality/valueEven though the water quality of the SAAR has been the subject of numerous studies, this is the only long-term investigation that has been done to evaluate and predict its water quality.

River Ecosystem Health Assessment in Rapid Urbanization Regions (Shenzhen, China) under the Guidance of Bioremediation Objectives

As a coastal city with rapid urbanization and high-intensity human activities, Shenzhen, China has carried out a series of comprehensive treatments for water pollution control and ecological restoration in recent years. However, the restoration effect is mainly reflected in the improvement of water quality and riparian landscape, and there is still a big gap in reaching the river’s ecological restoration goals. Therefore, it is necessary to make a full investigation and evaluation of river aquatic systems that focuses on the restoration of aquatic communities and ecosystem health. We surveyed forty-seven sampling sites in nine basins to investigate water quality and aquatic organisms (algae and macroinvertebrates) during the low-water period in 2019. Under the guidance of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), the urban river ecosystem health assessment system, with a total of twenty indicators from six criteria layers, was established. We addressed the bioremediation objectives in this system and aquatic organism indicators as high-weight characteristic indicators. The results showed that the degradation of the river ecosystem in Shenzhen is serious, which is mainly reflected in the simple structure of the aquatic biological community and the low biodiversity. Only one “healthy” sample site, accounting for 2% of the total sampling sites; six sites of “sub-health” level, accounting for 13%; twenty-four “poor” sample points, accounting for 51%; sixteen “extremely poor” sample points, accounting for 34%. From the perspective of spatial distribution, the river ecological status of Daya Bay Basin and Dapeng Bay Basin is good, which is at the level of “health” to “sub-health”; the Guanlan River Basin, Maozhou River Basin, Shenzhen River Basin, Shenzhen Bay Basin, Pingshan River Basin, and most of the Longgang River Basin are of “poor to extremely poor” grade; the Pearl Estuary basin is of “extremely poor” grade. This assessment system can be used as an effective tool to monitor the ecological health status, especially the enhancement of biodiversity and ecosystem function of rivers. Moreover, it could provide important decision-making guidance for river management affected by high-intensity human activities.

Machine Learning Algorithms for Predicting the Water Quality Index

Groundwater is one of the water resources used to preserve natural water sources for drinking, irrigation, and several other purposes, especially in industrial applications. Human activities related to industry and agriculture result in groundwater contamination. Therefore, investigating water quality is essential for drinking and irrigation purposes. In this work, the water quality index (WQI) was used to identify the suitability of water for drinking and irrigation. However, generating an accurate WQI requires much time, as errors may be made during the sub-index calculations. Hence, an artificial intelligence (AI) prediction model was built to reduce both time and errors. Eighty data samples were collected from Sakrand, a city in the province of Sindh, to investigate the area’s WQI. The classification learners were used with raw data samples and the normalized data to select the best classifier among the following decision trees: support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbors (K-NN), ensemble tree (ET), and discrimination analysis (DA). These were included in the classification learner tool in MATLAB. The results revealed that SVM was the best raw and normalized data classifier. The prediction accuracy levels for the training data were 90.8% and 89.2% for the raw and normalized data, respectively. Meanwhile, the prediction accuracy levels for the testing data were 86.67 and 93.33% for the raw and normalized data, respectively.

A holistic approach to the spatio-temporal variability investigation of the main river water quality – The importance of tributaries

The surface water pollution can cause serious ecological disasters. An example is large-scale fish deaths due to excessive salinity, which is global problem. In order to prevent such situations, it is necessary to carry out regular monitoring of both main rivers and their tributaries. The current monitoring system is neither adapted to the variability associated with the diversified use of catchments nor to changing climatic conditions. The Bzura River is one of the most anthropogenically transformed Polish rivers. So far, no comprehensive assessment of the chemical status of its catchment has been carried out. The presented research is a continuation of the study of the spatio-temporal variability of the Bzura chemistry. It covered 19 tributaries within the boundaries of the Łódź Voivodeship. Samples were collected once a month for one hydrological year. In total, 228 samples were obtained, in which 21 parameters were measured. Spatio-temporal variability of water quality on the basis of coefficients of variation (CVs) and water quality indices (WQIs) was evaluated. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were also performed. In addition, the datasets were visualized using geochemical maps. Combined monitoring with geospatial analysis brings benefits in terms of efficient control and management of water resources. The tributaries were divided according to the degree of their pollution. It was found that the electrical conductivity and concentrations of dissolved oxygen, nitrates, calcium and magnesium differentiated the tributaries in terms of pollution the most. The strong salinity from agricultural and geogenic sources was found. The WQIs were higher for the tributaries than for the Bzura. It suggests that the Bzura may be polluted by the tributaries under “favorable” climatic and hydrological conditions. Therefore, smaller watercourses should be included in monitoring and become more important in terms of an effective solution to global problem of surface water pollution.

Evaluating protein skimmer performance in a commercial seawater recirculating aquaculture system (RAS)

Combining protein skimming with ozone (O3) is a common method for removing microparticles in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Nevertheless, there is a limited number of studies that have validated protein skimming's performance at a commercial scale. Additionally, variations in protein skimmer designs and operational variables may yield different performance outcomes. In the present study, the performance of two types of full-scale protein skimmer (S1 and S2) were compared and evaluated under two levels of hydraulic retention time (HRT) (1.8 and 2.2 min) and three levels of O3 doses (0, 7, and 14 g O3/kg feed) in a commercial seawater RAS facility. Samples from the inlet and outlet of the protein skimmers were collected at each combination of operational variables. They were analysed for several relevant water quality parameters to quantify the treatment efficiency. O3 dose significantly improved water quality and reduced the numbers of microparticles and bacterial activity in a single pass. Besides that, doses as high as 14 g O3/kg feed significantly increased total residual oxidant (TRO) concentration. Additionally, an increase in HRT exerted a moderate effect on removing microparticles and a strong effect on redox potential (ORP) and TRO. Finally, the type of protein skimmer only affected the ORP, causing no significant changes to other water quality metrics. The correlations between the investigated water quality parameters defined a clear pattern of the ongoing processes and particle characteristics. Overall, the results demonstrated that protein skimming combined with carefully selected O3 doses can improve general water quality and control critical factors such as bacterial activity and microparticles under commercial operations.

After decades of agricultural landscape nutrient loadings, lake and watershed management efforts successfully reduced summer mean total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations to levels that met standards set specifically for shallow lakes in the Northern Glaciated Plains ecoregion (0.09 mg/L and 0.03 mg/L, respectively). The lake “flipped” from a turbid, phytoplankton-dominated phase (<20% macrophyte occurrence) to a clear, macrophyte-dominated phase (annual average of 90% occurrence), and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency removed it from the state’s impaired waters list. A paired groundwater and lake water quality investigation was critical in understanding how increased precipitation might affect lake water quality, the relationship between groundwater and surface water in this system, and how compounds such as chloride and phosphorus are transported through the watershed. Lakewide macrophyte occurrence has been sustained for at least 7 yr. While abundant macrophyte growth helps maintain a clear water state, it can also create recreational boating issues. Lake managers question how long the lake will remain in the present clear phase as lake users weigh the recreational and aesthetic differences between the 2 phases.
